Practical tips to help you following flood damage to your property

Here are some practical tips to help you at this difficult time.

• If you have been evacuated, don't return to the property until you have the all clear from the emergency services
• Keep all your damaged possessions until a loss adjuster, appointed by your insurance company, has inspected them
• Don’t attempt any restoration or cleaning work if you think the building may have suffered structural damage – discuss any concerns with your insurance company or their loss adjuster
• If you enter an area/property affected by flooding always wear protective footwear, clothing and rubber gloves
• Turn off the electricity and gas at the mains supply. A relevant qualified professional must check the system(s) before you reconnect them.
• Keep a record of the incident including:
• the time of the flood,
• the maximum depth of the water,
• how long the water was in the property,
• photos or a video of the damage are really helpful too.

• Throw away all food that may have been in contact with flood water
